Data Centre Geometry
An example data centre CAD model based on projects, which in real-life were built in repurposed light industrial buildings in the UK. The same model as used in our data centre CFD simulation case study. In this data center example utilises a cold aisle – hot aisle ventilation concept.
The room has a floor area of 90.76m2 (976.9ft2) with 10.8m and 8.4m (35.4ft x 27.55ft).
The CAD model is an assembly of the building, Computer Room Air Handling units (CRAHs), rack rows, floor and ceiling grids, cable trays and baskets in cold and hot plenums. It is a closed geometry, but we did not model air volumes. The geometry relies on your CAD/CFD tool to be able to fill in cavities with volumes.
4Nr CRAHs supply cold air via a 0.6m (1.96ft) high floor void to 21Nr server racks, which are organised in 3Nr rows. Server racks have a standard 1.2m x 0.6m (3.9ft x 1.96ft) footprint. Each server rack is 2.132m (7ft) tall without frames. 2Nr CRAHs pull air directly from the hot aisle, while the other 2Nr draw hot air from the ceiling void. Data hall designers often apply this arrangement when there is not enough room in the hot aisle for all CRAHs.
Being an example of a repurposed building, there are large boxed-in beams in the ceiling void. We took other air flow obstructions into account too. There are AC trays (orange) and wire baskets (purple) in the floor void. We put data trays (yellow) and data bars (cyan) in the cold aisle, where these would go in a real design.
The data centre geometry is provided in STEP (.stp) and Parasolid (.x_t) formats in a zip file to download.
We have created the original parametric model in Solid Edge in an MMKS (millimetre, kg, second) unit system.
Model properties:
- In STEP (.stp), Parasolid (.x_t) file formats,
- An assembly of the room walls, floor and ceiling grids, 4Nr CRAHs and 21Nr servers,
- Does not contain air volumes, but is a closed assembly. An automatic volume generation should create air volumes, if your CAD/CFD tool has this function,
- Data hall internal dimensions: 10.805m x 8.4m (35.4ft x 27.55ft), cold aisle room height: 2.748m (9ft). Check your units when scaling.
- Download file size is 3.49kB. When extracted, the stp file is the largest with 1076kB. Make sure you have suitable bandwith and storage capacity.
