Data Centre CFD Simulation Tutorial
We developed this tutorial to help CFD engineers understand what data center designers require from a ventilation simulation and how to reach these goals. It is written based on experience we gained while working on data centre simulation projects in the UK.
In the 47 page guide we detail data centre ventilation concepts and how to turn these into CAD models. A step-by-step workflow from defining boundary condition and mesh settings to results analysis covers all technical aspects. The training material details how to incorporate advanced level design parameters such as cold to hot domain leaks and failure scenarios.
We use the same 3D CAD model as in our data centre CFD simulation case study. This data centre CFD tutorial utilises a cold aisle – hot aisle ventilation concept.
The room has a floor area of 90.76m2 (976.9ft2) with 10.8m and 8.4m (35.4ft x 27.55ft).
The model is an assembly of the building, Computer Room Air Handling units (CRAHs), rack rows, floor and ceiling grids, cable trays and baskets in cold and hot plenums. It is a closed geometry, but we did not model all air volumes. The geometry relies on your CAD/CFD tool to be able to fill in cavities with volumes.
4 CRAHs supply cold air via a 0.6m (1.96ft) high floor void to 21 server racks, which are organised in 3 rows. 2 CRAHs pull air directly from the hot aisle, while the other 2 draw hot air from the ceiling void. A typical arrangement for repurposed buildings.
We have created the original parametric model in Solid Edge in an MMKS (millimetre, kg, second) unit system.
